Why see Valencia from the sea

Valencia is a city on the Mediterranean that often forgets it. Most visitors see the beach from the promenade. From a private boat in Valencia, you see the whole coast: the port and the Marina, the long sands of the Malvarrosa, the pine woods of El Saler to the south, and the mountains rising behind the city on a clear day.

It is also the calmest kind of luxury. A boat for your party only, a skipper who knows these waters, no schedule but your own. You swim when the water is right, eat when you are hungry and come back when the light starts to change.

How the day unfolds

Morning: leaving the Marina

Your driver brings you to the Marina de Valencia, the city’s old inner harbor, rebuilt to host the America’s Cup. Your skipper welcomes you on board a private sailing yacht or catamaran chosen for your group, and explains the plan for the day based on the wind and the sea.

You motor out past the old team bases and the breakwater, and then the sails go up. Within minutes the city is a low line behind you.

Late morning: under sail

The skipper sets a course along the coast, usually south toward the Albufera and El Saler, where the shore is all dunes and pines, or north past the beaches of the city. If you would like to take the helm, they will show you how. If not, there is a deck to lie on and a view to look at.

Midday: a swim

When you find calm, clear water, the boat anchors or drifts and you swim straight from the stern. Paddleboards or snorkeling gear can be on board. In summer, the sea is warm enough for long swims.

Lunch on board

Lunch is served on deck. It can be a simple, generous spread of Valencian tapas, salads and fruit, or a rice dish prepared on board or brought from a kitchen ashore, with chilled local wine. The menu is set in advance with your travel designer.

Afternoon: the return

A half day ends after lunch. On a full day, you sail on, swim again, or simply drift while the afternoon breeze builds. You return to the Marina in the late afternoon, where your driver is waiting.

Sunset alternative

On summer evenings, a shorter sunset sail is a lovely alternative: two or three hours on the water, a glass of cava and the city lights coming on as you come back in.

Who this is for

Couples who want a day away from everything. Families, especially on a catamaran, which is stable and spacious for children. Small groups of friends celebrating something. Experienced sailors who want to take the helm on a new coast, and complete beginners who would just like to be on the water.

Practical notes

  • Seasons. Late spring to early autumn is ideal for swimming. Spring and autumn bring steady breezes and quiet waters. Winter sailing is possible on calm days.
  • Weather. The skipper confirms the day based on wind and sea, and we keep a backup day where possible.
  • What to bring. Swimwear, sunscreen, a hat and a light layer. Soft-soled shoes, or bare feet on deck.
  • Seasickness. The coast is usually gentle, but if you are prone to seasickness, choose a catamaran and tell your skipper.

Adding it to a private journey

A day at sea is the perfect pause in a busy stay, after a private tour of Valencia and before an evening at a chef’s table. It features in Valencia in 5 days and a Valencia honeymoon. For more of the coast, a day trip to Jávea shows its rocky coves to the south. Your Private Valencia travel designer will match the boat to your party and the season.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need sailing experience to charter a private boat in Valencia?

No. Every charter includes a professional skipper who handles the boat. If you would like to take the helm or learn a little sailing, they are happy to teach.

Yacht or catamaran, which is better?

A sailing yacht is the classic experience, heeling under sail. A catamaran is more stable and spacious, with wide nets to lie on and more shade, which suits families, larger groups and anyone prone to seasickness.

When is the season for sailing in Valencia?

Swimming weather usually runs from late May to October. Spring and autumn are ideal for sailing, with steady breezes and fewer boats. Winter sailing is possible on calm, sunny days, without the swim.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Your skipper decides on the morning based on wind and sea. If conditions are not right, we move the outing to another day of your stay or suggest an alternative.

How many people can come on board?

That depends on the boat. Most charters suit a couple, a family or a small group of friends. Tell us your party size and we will propose the right vessel.
