The white village above the sea, and the mountains behind it.
The day
A day south along the coast to Altea, a white village built on a hill above the Mediterranean, with lunch by the sea and, if you wish, the castle village of Guadalest in the mountains behind.
Altea is the village most people picture when they think of the Mediterranean: white houses climbing a hill, narrow stepped lanes, and at the top a church whose domes are covered in blue and white glazed tiles. Behind it rise the mountains of the Sierra de Bernia; below it lies a long bay of pebbles and clear water.
It has long attracted painters and musicians, and the old town still has the quiet of a place where people live rather than visit, particularly from October to May.
Morning. Your driver collects you after breakfast. The road south follows the coast and then the orange groves and the mountains of the Marina Alta.
Altea. You arrive in time for a slow walk through the old town before it warms up: the church square, the lanes around it and the viewpoints over the bay. With a private guide, the walk becomes a story of the village and the people who shaped it.
Lunch. A long lunch by the sea, with rice or fish according to the day’s catch, at a table chosen for you. We choose it for the day and the season, often a fish house on the seafront or in the old fishing quarter.
Afternoon. Rest by the water, or drive twenty minutes into the mountains to Guadalest, a village built around a castle rock above a turquoise reservoir.
Return. Back in Valencia in the early evening.
For a different day, we can arrange a private yacht along the coast from Altea, with a swim in the coves of the Sierra de Bernia and lunch on board.

FAQ
Altea is around 120 km south of Valencia. By car it takes about an hour and a half on the AP-7 motorway. Your private driver collects you from your hotel and brings you back in the evening.
Yes, especially outside summer. It is one of the most beautiful old towns on the coast, small enough to enjoy in a few hours and close to the mountains if you want a change of scenery in the afternoon.
Guadalest and the waterfalls of Fonts de l'Algar are both nearby. For a longer stay, we can add a night on the Costa Blanca and continue to Jávea or Dénia.
