The Winemaker of Utiel-Requena

Winemaker

An hour inland, on a high plateau of old vines, our winemaker opens a family cellar that does not receive the public — and explains the place through its wine.

A plateau of old vines

The vineyards of Utiel-Requena sit at around 600 to 900 meters above sea level, with hot days, cold nights and a climate closer to inland Spain than to the coast. The native grape is Bobal, grown here for centuries, often as old bush vines.

Our winemaker belongs to the generation that has shown how fresh and characterful Bobal can be when yields are low and the old vines are respected.

In the vines and in the cellar

The visit begins outdoors, among the vines, with the season in front of you: pruning in winter, the first leaves in spring, the harvest in September and October. Inside, the tasting is a conversation with the person who makes the wine — from tank and barrel as well as from the bottle.

Lunch on the estate

The day usually ends with a long lunch nearby, with the dishes of the interior and wines that rarely leave the region.

Time with our winemaker is the heart of our Utiel-Requena wine tour and of the four-day journey.
